BRAIN SALAD SURGERY by The Rip-Off Artist
what? = "A very fine 14 track CD by Mr. Matt Haines, this is nothing like the 7" release Why Do Birds Sing? also out on Hot Air, it contains NO whistling and instead sways back and forth between highly electrical surge spike rhythms and perfect serene electro-dub, quite often within the same track. The rest of the CD has a catchiness all its own, sound so clean you can eat off it and more rhythmic twists, morphs and mutations per track than the wildlife surrounding Sellafield Nuclear Power Plant. Definitely a Brain of two halves."
Perhaps not given the attention it deserved on its 2001 release, personally I feel it has stood the test of time and is of interest to today's electronic musicians as a 'classic' all Kyma synthetic production, produced as it was on one of the earlier KYMA Capybara modular units from Symbolic Sound... Who knows what 'strange mathematics' Matt employed to get these Digital Strong Room pulses but if this is what a Capybara can do I am laying out Coypu bait in my studio in the hope of catching some....!
Matt should also get credit for extra Kyma Programming for some of Mr Uwe Schmitt's ATOMtm releases and for his own very respectable foray into music publishing under the INFLATABL label...er...label.
The Rip-Off Artist was later lured away from the Hot Air camp by Mille Plateau, Kid 606 for his Tigerbeat label and various other FancyPants Noughties Labels.... proving once again that the far-flung lands where Hot Air so nonchalantly stroll , other labels will eventually follow..
Mr Haines has left the music biz and is now California's most sought after NON-Digital Family Photographer.
Released 2001 on the HOT AIR label.
